(April 24, 2025) — In commemoration of the Jesuit value of “people for others” through service, two School of Health students have been presented with a Lena Landegger Community Service Award: Mary Truong (H’25) and Tara Haas (H’25). Both are human science majors and disability studies minors.

The award was named for Lena Landegger (H’87), recognized for being deeply committed to community service and sharing her passions with those around her. To honor her memory, the Landegger Charitable Foundation made a generous gift to Georgetown University for the purpose of awarding 20 undergraduates annually for distinguished contributions to community service.

Truong says she is “honored and deeply grateful” to be selected as a recipient.

“This award is incredibly meaningful to me because it’s a reminder that the work we do to support others doesn’t go unnoticed, and it motivates me to continue finding ways to give back,” she says. “Service has been one of the most transformative aspects of my Georgetown experience. I carry this award with immense gratitude, not only as recognition, but as a responsibility to continue serving with compassion and integrity.”

Like Truong, Haas also identifies community service as a definitive part of her years at Georgetown, making lifelong friends alongside other Hoyas involved in community service.

“This recognition is also very meaningful because it represents Georgetown’s commitment and passion for service,” Haas said. “Additionally, this award also encapsulates all the memories made, relationships formed, and collective collaborative efforts that we’ve all shared and brought to the Greater D.C. community.”

The awards were presented April 10 in the Riggs Library.
