Whiteness Explored as a Fundamental Determinant of Health in Rural America
For almost two decades, the mortality rate for rural residents in the United States has been higher than their urban counterparts, and the difference in the rate has only increased. Caroline Efird, PhD, MPH, an assistant professor in the Department of Health Management and Policy in the School of Health, believes whiteness, as a structural determinant of health, could be part of the explanation of what is driving the increasingly poor health status of rural white Americans.
