Day of Service at Food & Friends
(March 31, 2023) — School of Nursing and the School of Health students returned to Food & Friends, a Washington community-based organization, for their annual Day of Service on March 27.
Volunteers worked in shifts to help pack medically tailored meals for Food & Friends’ clients in the D.C. region living with HIV/AIDS, cancer, diabetes and other chronic illnesses.
Food & Friends was founded in 1988 by Westminster Presbyterian Church leaders to create a meal delivery program for people with AIDS. From their beginnings in a church basement, the organization has grown exponentially over time, now delivering 100,000 freshly prepared meals per month to clients in D.C., Maryland and Virginia.
The Day of Service was organized by the Committee on Mission and Values, supported by the School of Health and the School of Nursing. School of Nursing’s director of community engagement and clinical partnerships, Susan V. Coleman, MPH, BSN, RN, and Sr. Celeste Mokryzycki, chaplain for both schools, volunteered with the students.
