Health Student Presents at Global Social Justice Research Symposium

(October 9, 2024) — Fathia Fasasi (H’27), a sophomore with plans to major in Health Care Management & Policy, presented her summer research at the Global Social Justice Summer Research Symposium on September 20.

Fasasi is participating in an ongoing project called, “The Black Central Americas Project: Phase I – Constellating Black Central America,” a digital public humanities initiative to explore and advance Black Central American history, culture, and scholarship.

This summer, Fasasi and a fellow Hoya produced research reports on Black history, politics, and culture from three areas – Livingston, Guatemala; Limón, Costa Rica; and Panama City, Panamá – which will become part of a digital humanities map of Central America.

“The digital map we are creating will be valuable for historians, sociologists, anthropologists, artists, and non-traditional and independent scholars,” Fasasi says. “Our overachieving objective is to highlight the underrepresented stories of Black Central America and fill a long-existing gap in Caribbean studies.

Fasasi is a Laidlaw Scholar, which provided funding for her work.
